STAMFORD — Almost 3 million drones will be shipped worldwide in 2017, an increase of 39 percent over the 2016 total, according to a new forecast by IT consulting and research firm Gartner.
Drones’ global market revenue is expected to increase 34 percent to a total of more than $6 billion in 2017 and rise to more than $11.2 billion by 2020.
While personal and commercial drones face substantial regulation, the devices have enduring popularity. Some 2.8 million personal drones are projected to be shipped this year, compared with the shipment of about 174,000 commercial drones.
